The Home Building Association of Greater Portland (HBA) is a trade association representing the residential building and remodeling industries in the metropolitan Portland area. HBA is dedicated to maximizing housing choice for all who reside in the greater Portland area by uniting and supporting industry professionals in shaping an environment in which members can efficiently and profitably meet the diversified needs of its communities.
 
HBA began in 1936 and was officially incorporated in 1941. It is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders – one of over 700 independent local Home Builders Associations in the Country that are part of that national affiliation. HBA is one of the top 20 affiliated HBAs in the U.S. in terms of membership size, and one of the top five in terms of budget size.
 
HBA has 1243 members (678 corporate members and an additional 565 individual members), a staff of 11 (not counting its Home Building Foundation or temp and seasonal help), and a $5 million annual budget. Approximately one-third of its members are builders, developers and remodelers, another one-third are subcontractors, and the final one-third are suppliers, product distributors, lenders, realtors, title companies, architects, designers, engineers and other industry professionals.
 
HBA produces three consumer shows annually that collectively attract between 75,000 – 100,000 attendees. These include the NW Natural Street of Dreams (est. 1976), the Portland Spring Home & Garden Show (est. 1948),and the Homes of Tomorrow Today Tour (est. 2021).
 
HBA has a wholly-owned 501c(3) non-profit Home Building Foundation, with a staff of three, which oversees philanthropic efforts of the industry that help with building, renovating and expanding shelters for transitional homeless care providers across the region.
 
HBA represents the industry across its jurisdiction, which includes six counties (Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Yamhill, Columbia and Hood River), dozens of cities and special districts, and the Metro Regional Government. This includes engaging with local governments, special interest groups, public utilities, and any other entity that has an impact on residential land use, building, development and construction.
 
HBA produces 50 to 100 educational programs and events throughout the year, from small networking events to very large gatherings like our Annual Housing Forecast (over 500 attendees), our Home Building Foundation’s Auction and Gala (over 300 people), our HBA Honors event (over 200 people), our BuildRight Conference and our NW Natural Street of Dreams Block Party (over 1,200 people). Members can also participate within specialty interest councils, including a Professional Remodelers Organization, a Professional Women in Building Council, a Home Performance Council, an Urban Building and Development Council, a Production Builders Council, and two new ones starting up in 2018 – a Mixed Use/Multi-Family Council and a Young Professionals Council.
 
HBA’s offices are located in Lake Oswego in a 22,000 sq.ft. building it had built and owns. Staff offices and several meeting rooms are located on the third floor. Office space on the second floor is leased out to other companies. The first floor contains a large conference center capable of holding events for over 300 people, as well as a classroom, bar/reception area, and a commercial kitchen.
